It is also the most reliable one in emergencies, thanks to its excellent fire and earthquake proof qualities. Also being equipped with a manual lowering and having its machine room located at the basement makes it the most user friendly elevator. Some sales persons however, try to dissuade customers from buying a hydraulic elevator, sighting the bad odor of the operating fluid as a major drawback. Pneumatic or vacuum elevators are known to be quite noisy. They come with their own hoist and hence do not need a machine room. They use a suction creating pneumatic vacuum to transport the elevator cabin between floors. Its load capacity is limited, enabling it to carry only two people at a time. But due the absence of the machine room, its installation cost is much lower than that of the hydraulic variety. Overhead Drum Elevators
The overhead drum residential elevators do not require a machine room, just like the pneumatic variety. Since they do not require oil to function, they are eco-friendly and are ideal for use in modern times. This type of elevator is installed on of the roof and the elevator car does not require counterweights to move.
The Counterweight, also known as the electric elevator, is operated by counterweights that keep the elevator car suspended in a shaft. This type of residential elevator does not use oil. Its suspension system makes this elevator less safe, especially during earthquakes. Experts generally advise against using counterweight elevators in earthquake prone areas because their suspension system makes them prone to accidents.
